Trump Slaps 50% Tariff on Canada, Escalating North American Trade War

Trump Slaps 50% Tariff on Canada, Escalating North American Trade War

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian imports, accusing Canada of unfair treatment of American automobiles, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages. The White House said the new tariffs will take effect within 30 days and will apply to products such as wine, hockey sticks, and cement, while exempting energy, potash, critical minerals, and fish. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the move as a violation of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) and described it as a threat to Canada's sovereignty, while confirming that Ottawa will intensify trade talks with Washington. The latest measure adds to existing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber, and auto parts, raising fears of a broader trade war. Business groups have urged both countries to resolve the dispute through negotiations, warning that further retaliatory tariffs could disrupt supply chains, impact manufacturers, and increase volatility in global markets.
