Government Distributes Land Ownership Certificates to 135 Families in First Quarter
The government has distributed land ownership certificates (Lalpurja) to 135 families during the first quarter of FY 2083/84, as part of its ongoing efforts to address landlessness and manage unorganized settlements across the country. Of the total beneficiaries, 11 were landless Dalit families, 41 were landless squatters, and 83 belonged to unorganized settlements.
According to the first-quarter progress report of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, the Land Problem Resolution Committee (Tahachal) distributed the certificates between Shrawan 1 and the end of Ashwin. The report, published today, states that the committee has intensified data collection, verification, and mapping activities to resolve land-related issues affecting landless Dalits, landless squatters, and residents of unorganized settlements. During the review period, a total of 51,517 applications were entered into the committee's information system. These included 7,070 applications from landless Dalits, 8,083 from landless squatters, and 31,317 from residents of unorganized settlements. Additionally, 5,127 applications were registered to complete pending work from previous land commissions. As part of efforts to make land identification and distribution more systematic, the committee completed the mapping of 1,947 land plots in different parts of the country during the quarter. Meanwhile, to address land-related issues within the Kathmandu Valley, the committee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhaktapur Municipality to facilitate land distribution to landless Dalits and squatters and manage unorganized settlements. Following the agreement, a formal public notice was also issued to collect accurate data from the concerned households. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the identification, verification, and distribution process to address long-standing land ownership issues and provide legal ownership to eligible families.
