Government to Rebuild Flood-Affected Homes While Preserving Local Identity

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal has said the government will rebuild private residences in flood-affected areas while preserving the local identity and character of the communities. Speaking at a parliamentary special committee meeting held in Singha Durbar on the impact of climate change in the Himalayas, climate justice, and the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli disaster, Lamsal said the government would not follow the uniform housing model used during post-earthquake reconstruction. He said the government has one- and two-storey house models, with homes designed to have at least four rooms, including two bedrooms, while ensuring that the houses are acceptable to local residents. Reconstruction will be carried out in coordination with local governments and affected communities. Lamsal also said high-risk areas will be identified and declared unsafe where necessary, with settlements prohibited in locations deemed unsuitable for habitation. The minister further said the government would take responsibility for the protection and management of senior citizens and children in affected areas. The government will support children in areas including education and employment, while necessary arrangements will be made for the protection and care of senior citizens.
