Bangladesh is facing an unusual cash problem, with a shortage of fresh and usable banknotes despite money remaining available through banks and ATMs. The shortage is particularly severe for Tk10, Tk20 and Tk100 notes, making everyday shopping and small transactions difficult as consumers and shopkeepers struggle to arrange change. At the same time, damaged notes with tears, holes, tape and excessive dirt are increasingly circulating, while some businesses and machines refuse to accept them. The situation has been further complicated by delays in producing redesigned banknotes, limited printing capacity and difficulties in sourcing imported raw materials. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank spent Tk458.92 crore on printing new notes in FY2025/26, up nearly 95% from the previous year. The central bank has also highlighted digital payment systems such as Bangla QR as a long-term way to reduce dependence on physical cash.
