    Government Preparing Electricity Consumption Strategy

Nepal government plans a new strategy to boost electricity use and reduce petroleum imports.

    Government Preparing Electricity Consumption Strategy

The Government of Nepal is preparing an electricity consumption strategy aimed at increasing domestic electricity use and reducing dependence on imported petroleum products, according to Energy Minister Birajbhakt Shrestha.

During a meeting with the Nepal Industry Confederation, the minister highlighted the need to promote electricity consumption across industries and households as part of a broader energy transition plan.

The initiative focuses on expanding hydropower utilization, encouraging electric-based industrial systems, and replacing fossil-fuel-based equipment with electric alternatives. It also aligns with policies allowing private sector participation in electricity trade and transmission infrastructure.

Industry representatives emphasized the need for stronger policies such as faster power purchase agreements (PPAs), incentives for electric adoption, and expanded energy trading opportunities.

The strategy is expected to support Nepal’s long-term goal of energy self-reliance while reducing fossil fuel imports and strengthening the hydropower sector.
