Capital Gains Tax on Listed Shares in Nepal

Nepal's Inland Revenue Department states that a resident individual pays 7.5% on gains from listed shares held for 365 days or less and 5% when the shares are held for more than 365 days. A resident entity is subject to a 10% rate. The calculator asks for the applicable individual rate when estimating a sale.

Tax rules and transaction charges can change. Confirm the current treatment with your broker and review the official guidance from the Inland Revenue Department before relying on an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the NEPSE share calculator calculate?

It estimates the total cost of buying shares or the net amount received after selling shares. The result includes transaction charges and, when applicable, capital gains tax and profit or loss.

What capital gains tax rate applies when selling listed shares in Nepal?

For a resident individual, the rate is 7.5% on gains from listed shares held for 365 days or less and 5% when held for more than 365 days. Resident entities are subject to a different rate.

Is capital gains tax charged when a share is sold at a loss?

No capital gains tax is calculated when the sale does not produce a taxable gain. Transaction charges can still apply to the sale.

What is WACC in a NEPSE share calculation?

WACC is the weighted average cost per share. It combines the cost of shares bought at different prices and is commonly used as the cost basis when calculating a gain or loss.

Can I use this calculator before placing a NEPSE trade?

Yes. Use it to estimate transaction costs and net proceeds before placing an order, then confirm the final contract note and current charges with your licensed broker.
