Flydubai Co-Pilot Accused of Attacking Captain Identified as Omani Citizen
The co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv has reportedly been identified as Omani citizen Hamam Al-Hamami, although authorities have not officially confirmed his identity or alleged extremist views.
The co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of Flydubai flight FZ 1073, which was carrying 174 passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv, has reportedly been identified as Omani citizen Hamam Al-Hamami, according to multiple media reports citing unnamed officials and sources familiar with the investigation. The UAE has described the incident as an attempted terrorist act, alleging that the co-pilot attacked Indian captain Smit Machhar with an emergency crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft making a sharp descent of more than 17,000 feet within about two minutes before regaining altitude. Passengers and crew members reportedly intervened and subdued the co-pilot, while two reserve pilots on board took control of the aircraft. The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely, and both pilots were later transferred to Abu Dhabi for further medical treatment. Media reports have also alleged that Al-Hamami had previously been restricted from flying in Oman over suspected extremist views, although there has been no official confirmation of these claims. Investigators are examining the motive behind the attack, whether it was pre-planned, and whether the co-pilot acted alone or had links to other individuals or extremist groups. UAE authorities are also reviewing physical and digital evidence and have said that the findings will be made public after the investigation is completed. Meanwhile, Flydubai flights to Israel remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
