Lawmakers Call for Policy, Technology and Regulatory Reforms to Strengthen Nepal’s Share Market
Members of the House of Representatives’ Finance Committee have called for clearer policies, stronger regulation, upgraded technology, increased investment, and tighter controls on market irregularities to improve Nepal’s share market.
During the committee meeting, lawmakers raised a range of issues related to the development and regulation of Nepal’s capital market. They called for an environment where eligible companies can raise capital through the market, while also emphasizing stronger measures against insider trading, artificial transactions, short selling-related irregularities, and other market distortions. Concerns were also raised over repeated technical problems at NEPSE and unequal access to its API, with lawmakers seeking a more reliable trading system and stronger market infrastructure. The stalled IPO pipeline, the need to review existing securities laws and the 10-kitta policy, and clearer reasons for approving or rejecting IPO applications were also discussed. Lawmakers further stressed the need to attract NRN and foreign investment, improve coordination among the Ministry of Finance, SEBON, NEPSE and other stakeholders, and develop concrete action plans for long-term market transparency and governance.
