Indian Banks Face 3-Day Nationwide Strike, Five-Day Service Disruption Looms

Bank employees in India are set to stage a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, following a call by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), with demands including the introduction of a five-day banking week. The strike could significantly disrupt banking operations, with an estimated INR 15,000–20,000 crore worth of cheque payments potentially getting delayed. The disruption could become more pronounced as September 26 falls on the fourth Saturday and September 27 on Sunday, creating the possibility of five consecutive days of limited banking services. In response, the government is reportedly preparing to keep branches of public-sector banks open on Sunday to ensure essential banking services remain available. India’s banking system handles a massive volume of transactions every day. According to the reports, UPI alone processes around INR 88,000 crore to INR 1 lakh crore in transactions daily. Besides UPI, cheque clearing, NEFT, RTGS, cash transactions, lending, government payments and foreign-exchange services could also face delays or disruptions. However, not all transactions affected by the strike should be considered an outright financial loss. Many delayed transactions could be completed after the strike, while digital services such as UPI, ATMs, mobile banking and internet banking may continue operating. The broader impact is expected to be reflected in transaction delays, pressure on business cash flows and disruptions to payment cycles. Bank employee organizations are demanding a five-day banking week, among other issues, and millions of employees are expected to participate in the strike. Some major private-sector banks, however, are reportedly not participating and are expected to continue their services. The timing of the strike is also significant, as September 30 marks the half-yearly closing of accounts for Indian banks. Any disruption in banking operations on the date could add pressure to financial reporting and management processes.
